We're a couple weeks away from Halloween, so it's only appropriate to discuss the Halloween Capital of the World; Anoka County! Known as one of the first to host a Halloween parade, this county showcases a growing and welcoming community just north of the Twin Cities area. Following suit, is a small town called Ramsey. Another great spot we hold close to us. Check out the history and reasons why we feel privileged to have a Security Bank location here!
Prior to the haunted circumstances, Anoka and Ramsey were both home to the Dakota people and Objibwa tribe. Anoka was described as a “large and handsome village,” by C.C. Andrews, and was formed as an official town in 1878 followed by the establishment of the Anoka Hospital. The haunted Asylum housed over 1,100 patients suffering from mental illnesses dating back to 1900 until the closure in 1999. Between old boarded-up cottages of previous residents and a secret network of tunnels under the facilities, establishes many frightening rumors. Paranormal investigators tend to suggest to avoid the dated hospital at all costs, but those who are looking for a thrill are able to go there and take pictures upon approval. The dated hospital warns “you may leave with something that will never leave you.” The Anoka State Hospital is now known as the most haunted place in Minnesota.
Continuing with the haunted theme, establishes a perfect reasoning for the beginning of Halloween parades. Dating back to the 1920s, Anoka has been hosting a Halloween Parade full of spooky ghosts and loads of candy. The tradition has upheld to this day, with the exception of two years during WWII. This year, the Grande Halloween Parade will be held on Saturday, October 27th. To find a complete list of activities over the weekend, you can view them here.
Ramsey has a much less haunted extended history. The now 23,000 populated town, once was established because of Alexander Ramsey. An individual who was the first territorial Governor of Minnesota.
If you prefer to avoid the haunted Anoka attractions, there are plenty of great shopping and eating opportunities in the area. I ventured downtown to check out the local shops, delighted to discover many adorable antique stores. One of my favorites was a boutique named happenstance. Filled with lovely gifts, delicate jewelry, and fall themed decor, I had to restrain myself from purchasing every item available.
If you’re a bit tired from shopping, you can venture to a trailed area right next to the downtown shops. The short hike is perfect for observing the beautiful fall tree colors.
After you’ve had your fill of the downtown area, stop by the Mad Hatter for a delicious and adorable brunch. This restaurant is filled with delightful pastries, soothing drinks, and charming decor. During the summer and early fall months, there’s plenty of outdoor space filled with benches and various yard games to enjoy with your tea experience. Make sure you have a reservation before attending the restaurant though as tables fill up rather quickly.
One of our favorite events at Security Bank happened just last month, Ramsey Happy Days. This September weekend is a great time to appreciate the town through various local events connecting individuals in the community. We had the pleasure to be featured in the parade section, passing out Security gear and lots of candy.
The month of October is filled with many fantastic events in the area! One interesting themed event is the Knights of Columbus Haunted House. Opening each weekend starting October 12th, the Anoka County Fair Grounds are transformed into a haunted space. This experience only costs $10 and is a great way to become excited for Halloween.
Continue the Halloween excitement on the weekend of October 26th - 28th! A children’s parade will kick off the weekend, as kids of all ages show off their Halloween costumes. Saturday is filled with a Spooktacular Carnival, before and after parade activities, followed by the main event, the Grande Day Parade! This year will be the 98th celebration of Anoka being the Halloween Capital of the World.
Anoka-Ramsey is a great Twin Cities area worth checking out, especially during the month of October. We’re thankful to have a Security branch located in this spooky destination!
